A record of the lunar eclipse – March 3rd 2007

This series of photographs was taken between 10.30 and 11.00 pm on 3rd March in Somerset using one of two camera lenses fitted to an MX 716 CCD camera. Exposure times were a few hundredths of a second.

In the first three pictures you can still see some sunlight on the upper left part of the Moon's disc but this has almost disappeared in the two larger pictures where the shadow of the Earth almost completely covers the Moon's surface. The Moon looked a pinkish red due to the light from the Sun having passed through the Earth's atmosphere before striking the Moon.
