Average speed

It’s very unusual for something to travel at an exactly constant speed - it will probably change as time goes by. Sometimes it will have been going faster and sometimes slower.

A useful quantity is the average speed.

Average speed = Total distance/Total timespaces Total distance = Average speed x Total time

If the speed changes STEADILY from one speed to another then:
Average speed= [Final speed – Initial speed]/2
